In “Physics, Chapter VIII,” Aristotle presents the argument that motion is eternal. I will begin by explaining the argument. I will then develop my objections against this, consider a possible response, and then discuss which view I believe to be right.

I have presented Aristotle’s argument in the standard form by using Modus Ponens. He acknowledges the fact that motion exists. He also says that in order to have motion, you have to have something that is capable of being moved. In this, meaning—in order to have motion, there has to be something that moves it. The world moves through motion and something that moves is eternal. Therefore, Aristotle is able to say motion is eternal by means of movement of the world.

In On the Eternity of the World, Thomas Aquinas presents his thoughts on the origin of God and how it relates to the age of the world. I will begin by explaining Aquinas’s argument. I will then develop my objections against this, consider a possible response, and end with my personal opinion on which view I believe is right.

A possible response Aristotle would have to this objection would be that one must not place their entire emphasis of eternity on whether or not the object is always in motion. It must be placed on the actual occurrence of its motion at any given point in time. In this, he questioned motion and its capability of being eternal at the time of its movement.

My view concerning which is right has a great deal to do with Bonaventure’s premises, which imply his conclusion that the world is not infinitely old. I agree with his argument because it is impossible for something to be infinite if more is added to it. There is nothing that is more than infinite. In order to say the world is infinitely old, you have to have information to back it up. Likewise, you have to have information to support that the world is not infinitely old. Bonaventure did an excellent job in stating this in his argument on the age of the world.
