Analysis Of Candide


            
             The setting in Voltaire's "Candide" is important, since Candied is a travelogue the setting plays a major role in the story line. As the setting changes the events and challenges the characters endures change as well. One major aspect that influences the setting is the political attitude of the time. The social structure is another aspect during the enlightenment that affects the setting as it directly relates to what the characters knows and owns. Voltaire uses the religious attitude of the time to create the setting as well. The changing of the settings provide an outlet for new adventures.
             The primary source of government is a monarchy when Voltaire writes Candide. This takes his characters to many adventures in lands where kings and nobility rule. The story in West Phalia were candied is born in the castle of the baron of Thunder-Yen-Tronckh. Pangloss is the oracle of this castle; he gives instructions on metaphysico-theologico-cosmoloonigology. Prangloss proves to Candide that there can not be a cause without an effect. This is the beginning of Candide's philosophy of all things happen for the best and sets the knowledge aspect of the setting. While in the home of the Baron Candide falls in love with his daughter Cunegonde. His love of her causes him to be banished from the castle, which changes the setting. Once out of the Barons castle Candide faces the Bulgors who recruit him. The Bulgers latter beats Candide for desertion and he becomes a beggar on the street, however Candide believes that this has happened for the good of all things. Thus the time Candide spends in the Barons castle and his run-ins with the Bulgers are prime examples of how the political attitude of the time influences the setting.
             Candide takes place during the Enlightenment period when there is no middle class. There are only two social status the have's and the have not's. Each time Voltaire's characters enter a new adventure their social status changes as well.
