Anthropolgy- Taking A Nas Song And Depicting The Meaning

Words went put together don’t only make sentences, but the words, phrases, and sentences make visions, pictures and ideas in our minds. Songs often become our favorites or have special meaning when the words have meaning, and we can make a connection with what the singer/ writer has to say. Hip - Hop and rap often are classified as music that promotes; violence, drugs and inappropriate behavior. Yet many of the most famous rappers have sent positive messages to their listeners.

Nasir Bin Olu Dara Jones, A.K.A. “Nas Escobar” has a gift. He writes songs that come from his heart and from what he has seen in his lifetime. Born and raised in Queens Bridge, Queens New York he has seen a lot in his 29 years. His lyrics are “raw” and to the point. In the song “I can”, Nas offers lyrics of hope and continued support to children. This song contains many stories, all promoting one thing, with perseverance and knowing that in with time and many lessons to be learned, one will grow and become something great.

Nas has been known for many of his songs/ and the meaning of his lyrics, but this song is not only making its way up the charts, but into the minds of many. When one hears a child singing “ I know I can, be what I wanna

There is a huge debate whether the media (television, radio, video games etc.) can influence a child in a negative way. This is just the opposite, if anything this song reminds any of us that one decision can change your life forever, so think and look at the options and where you really want to go and who you want to be.

“Young boys, you can use a lot of help, you know. You thinking life’s all about smoking weed and ice. You don’t wanna be my age and can’t read or write, begging different girls for a place to sleep at night. Smart boys turn to men, and do whatever they wish.” (Nas)

This song has worked its way up the record charts and has continued to be noticed not only of the catchy beat, but the lyrics and meaning behind it all. This is a song that a child can listen to and there isn’t swears or a negative message being said to them.

The next story continues to tell young girls that there is no rush to grow up. Stop acting and dressing like they’re older. Because there are men out there who will not realize (or care) how young one is and has sex with them, and with that there’s a risk of getting HIV. (As well as other sexually transmitted diseases) Nas also addresses the young boys, explaining that life isn’t just about smoking weed and having lots of jewelry. In the long run, it’s an education that can help.
