Snowball was the most sympathetic animal that could be leader of the animal farm. He had the ability to lead as well as the passion for the betterment of Animal Farm. He believed in Old Major’s vision and wanted to help make it a reality. George Orwell felt very passionately about his genuine concern for the world’s opinion of the Soviet Union. He wanted people to remember what the Soviet Union was built on, the underhanded, devilish antics of Joseph Stalin. In order to relate his opinion to his general audience without controversy, he chose to depict the events of the Russian Revolution in a round-a-bout way through a story of an animal rebellion. He did a very good job of creating a storyline parallel to an actual historical event. All the characters in the story had historical counterparts, and as proved in this paper, Snowball evidently represented Leon Trotsky.

In late February 1917 the Soviets were under control by a great motivator, Vladimir Lenin. Lenin was aided in his reign by two prominent communist allies, Trotsky and Stalin. The three guided soviet policy, promising workers and soldiers food, abundant land, and an end to Russia’s involvement in the war. In October of 1917, Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin decided to make their move. On October 24, 1917, the assault on the Provisional government in St. Petersburg began (Volkogonov, pg 98). By the following night, the Provisional Government had fallen. Before Lenin could bring about the golden days of the new government, he suffered three paralyzing strokes.
