Animal Research And Testing-w/bib

One of the most sensitive aspects of our relationship with animals is the use of animals in laboratory sciences. Some manufactures of cosmetics and household products still conduct painful and useless tests on live animals, even though no law requires them not to. Some people, called anti-vivisectionists, are at one extreme in their concern. They want to abolish all experiments on live animals. At the other extreme there are those who say that it is quite all right for us to do whatever we like to animals. They say that God gave us such a right, since it is written in the bible (Genesis 1:26) that man has dominion over all creatures.(8) If these tests give some educational value, add to scientific knowledge, or can help improve human health, they argue that it is worth killing animals or subjecting them to painful experiments. The following pages are not written from specific point of view, nevertheless, it will explain the practice of animal research and testing.

Medicines, household products, food, and basically everything involved in the life of an average person has to under go a form of testing before it is legal to be placed on a shelf and available to the public. The FDA requires animal testing on pharmaceuticals and oth

Not only do humans benefit from the research done on animals, but, so do the animals themselves. Many of the drugs and procedures that have been of importance for humans are of equal effectiveness in animals. The attempt to produce vaccines against animal’s disease began almost as early as that of humans. Over half of the veterinary medicine used today originated from medicine used on humans, such as the vaccine formed for feline leukemia.(10)

History’s most infamous drug disaster left 10,000 people crippled and deformed. The culprit was thalidomide, marketed initially as a sedative by German scientists. Its clinical acceptance was based on an apparent lack of toxicity testing. Animals involved in testing could tolerate massive doses in routine tests without ill effects, but when the drug was introduced to the public it caused a reaction with the nervous system of small children, harming them for life.(6)

The testing of cosmetic products on animals is an area of animal testing that a majority of activists feel should be dealt with first. There are many types of testing performed in the cosmetics industry, which potentially involve the use of animals. Some of these are tests for eye and skin irritancy, skin penetration, skin sensitization, acute and chronic toxicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, teratogenicity, and finished product safety evaluation.(12) Testing cosmetics on animals does not give our society any information that can not be found with alternative methods. Even some supporters of animal testing feel that cosmetics are a frivolous reason to waste the life of an animal. Proctor and Gamble are renowned for duplicating tests already completed by other labs.(11)
