Are Modern Attacks On Columbus Justified?

Christopher Columbus discovered America. The Vikings discovered America in the 11th century, about 400 years before Christopher Columbus did. What does this entirely mean? Today in the modern world everyone is stuck thinking who did discover America. Through tradition and popular legend, Christopher Columbus is believed to be the first explorer to “discover” America. But his original purpose was to sail west to Asia rather than east and not to discover America. But some people disagree with Christopher Columbus being the first man to “discover” America. There are many different sides to the stories about Columbus, but modern attacks on Columbus are not justified because Christopher Columbus had good navigational skills and knowledge about the Atlantic Ocean before his voyage, Christopher Columbus main purpose for his voyage was not deceiving and conquest, and he was able to prove after his voyages.

Columbus was a good navigator, he learned about the winds and ocean currents from the local pilots and sailors before making his voyage. One time in the waters off the coast of Africa and near the Canary Islands, Columbus observed the ocean phenomenon known as the Canaries Current.

Finally, all of these reasons explain why Columbus “discovered” America and why modern attacks on Columbus are not justified. Though he may not have technically or actually stet foot in America (North America or South America), he still was able to show there was indeed land west of the Atlantic Ocean. Even though the Vikings or English Fishermen saw and may have actually set foot on America, their discoveries never became widespread as much as Columbus’s was. Columbus main purpose was to sail west of the Atlantic to reach Asian markets. Knowing about the Canaries Current could have been the main reason why Columbus chose to start his crossing of the Atlantic in the latitude of the Canaries, far south of Spain or Portugal. Though he never acknowledged whether he ever did reach Asia or not he STILL DID SHOW that there was LAND WEST of the ATLANTIC OCEAN. For these reasons modern attacks on Columbus are not justified.

Modern attacks on Columbus defy his main reason and purpose for his voyage! His purpose was to prove to the world there was land west of the Atlantic by sailing west to reach Asian markets instead of east (Traditions and Encounters). Because geographers in the eastern hemisphere knew nothing about the Americas and possibly the Western Hemisphere as a whole, Columbus’s notice made lots of sense to assume that there could be land to the west. Because Portugal and Spain had not known at this time that there was land to the west of the Atlantic Ocean, they thought the Americas to be non existent from the world. Though some other societies might have possibly known that there was land west of the Atlantic like the Vikings or English fishermen had, Portugal and Spain were not aware of the countries Columbus have seen in his voyages.
