Artificial Intelligence

“Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is the science and engineering of building intelligent machines.” Within this fascinating field there are three main schools of AI: people trying to model what humans do (sort of psychology based) people trying to make what people do easier and better (tools for humans), and people who are trying to build new tools with “far out” capabilities.

Considering the three schools of artificial intelligence, they all compound to one point; people trying to build machines that would model what humans do. Mimicking human behavior as the main goal seems to be a very attainable one. To copy human behavior you must further analyze what human- beings do with ease. Consider what we do subconsciously without much effort is very difficult to a computer. We carry out numerous; even multiple tasks all at once that can make a machine stumble more than once trying to mimic us.

First we have our basic desire of communicating, which comes very easy to us but to a machine to understand language and use it accordingly would be very difficult. The reason for this is that language has numerous problems associated with it. One problem would be simply the syntax of the grammar. There is technology even tod

To further explain this analysis of the constraints of computers I use the Chinese Experiment of the philosopher John Searle. In his analogy he describes a room in which he sits in that has a book that helps him match up correct outputs for inputs given to him in Chinese. In this room it is just he, the book and cards with correct outputs for any of the inputs given to him theoretically. In this room he sits waiting upon input which is written in Chinese, which he does not understand, and goes to the book which points him to the deck of cards that match the symbols with the correct outputs. He then slides the card out in the output slot to the waiting scientists. Searle helps analyze what computers are able to do, which is to manipulate symbols according to rules, and what they are not able to do, with this Chinese Room experiment. In this one thinking experiment, the analogy of computers and artificial intelligence is decided. According to Searle, computers that do not understand cannot be intelligent.

Consider for a moment the possibility of these machines that can walk and climb stairs. ASIMO perhaps a predecessor of a machine that would do jobs that are dangerous now for humans to do, such as firefighting or scaling skyscrapers to put in rivets for construction. There are places that these machines could go to that would no longer place humans in danger. Even the possibility of off sea diving or oil drilling off the coast is another dangerous job that these machines could do. Even the possibility of space exploration brings fascination for engineers today.
