Attachment And Romanian Orphanages
In another study researchers examined attachment security and indiscriminately friendly behavior in children adopted from Romanian Orphanages. This study had two goals, the first was to assess differences in attachment security between children adopted to Canada after at least 8 months in Romanian orphanages and two comparison groups of children. The second goal was to assess the presence of indiscriminately friendly behavior in children adopted from Romanian orphanages, and to evaluate whether their behavior was present to a greater extent than the comparison group. Indiscriminately friendly behavior was characterized as behavior that is affectionate and friendly toward all adults (including strangers) without the fear or caution characteristic of normal children. The subjects in this study were broken down into three groups, an experimental group and two comparison groups. The Experimental Group referred to as RO consisted of 46 children, (20 boys and 26 girls) who had spent at least 8 months in a Romanian orphanage prior to their adoption to Canada. The ages of these children ranged from 8 months old to 5 ½ years old, the median age at adoption was 18.5 months old. Time spent in a Romanian orph
Parents of the RO children were interviewed in the homes for about 2.5 hours. All interviews were audiotaped. Questionnaires were left with the parents to complete and return by mail. Interviews with parents of the CB and RC children were conducted by telephone and recorded verbatim by the interviewer. Questionnaires were mailed to the parents of the CB and RC children to be completed and returned by mail. Attachment security measure was comprised of 23 items with the highest and lowest loadings on the security scale of the Waters and Deane (1985) Attachment Q-sort. Parents responded to each of the 23 items using a 5 point scale 1 = very unlike my child to 5 = very like my child. The interviewer read each item aloud and recorded the parent’s responses. Indiscriminately friendly behavior measure was assessed using 5 questions. The parents’ responses to each question were recorded verbatim and were coded categorically by two independent coders who were blind both to the adoption status of the children and the hypotheses of the study. The responses to the 5 questions were given and score of 1 or 0 (1 IF behavior present, 0 not present). The last measure used was the PSI, or the parenting stress index. Parents in all 3 groups completed the PSI and returned it by mail. Only the parent attachment subscale scores were used for this study. Parents responded to each item using a 5 point scale (1 = strongly agree to 5 = strongly disagree). Scoring of negative items was re
