Babe Ruth “ Colossus Of Clout“
During the roaring 1920’s one man captured the hearts and eyes of a nation. He belted homers, advertised products, was good with kids, and lived the lifestyle of a truly over indulgent man. This man was George Herman Ruth. He is otherwise known as “The Babe”, “ The Colossus of Clout”, “The Sultan of Swat”, and “The Great Bambino”. George Herman Ruth was born on February 6, 1895 in his grandfathers house in Baltimore, MD. Young George spent much of his childhood skipping school and getting into trouble. At this time , every city had institutions set up for young delinquents whose families couldn’t control them. In 1902, George’s mother sent him to one such institution, St. Mary’s. George would live there for the next 12 years. While at St. Mary’s, George received guidance from Brother Matthias. Brother Matthias was a huge man, he stood 6’6” tall and weighed nearly 250 lbs. George was a kid with a lot of energy. He played a lot of practical jokes and acted out. Brother Matthias focused George’s energy into baseball. From the very beginning, George could throw harder and hit farther than many of the bigger , older boys. Georges talents continued to grow and by the age of 19, George was
Babe Ruth made his last stop in Boston, playing for the Boston Braves in 1935. The Babe retired after the 1935 season and had amassed a record 714 homers. He also held 12 home run titles, more than any other player in history. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, a year after he retired. The Babe died of Cancer on August 16, 1948. The Babe was the greatest baseball player of all time, and has left an indelible mark on America our National pastime of baseball. No player before, and no player since has had the drawing power of “ The Great Bambino”, and I don’t believe anyone ever will. No one forgets a hero, but a legend never dies. Babe Ruth was a legend, and he will forever live in immortality. considering a professional contract with the Baltimore Orioles. In that time at 19 you were still considered a minor, so Brother Matthias had to sign all of Georges papers. George’s first professional contract paid him $600 for the season. Even with fame, George would never forget the St. Mary’s school and often came back and played ball games with the boys. As far as American History is concerned, Babe Ruth is probably one of the most Identifiable things our History. If you ask anyone in the world most likely they can tell you who the “ The Babe” was. Babe Ruth wasn’t just the greatest baseball player of all time in my opinion, but one of the greatest American icons in our history. From 1914 on, George would be known as Babe Ruth. This game was given to him during spring training in march of 1914. He received it due to the protection from razzing and practical jokes
