Bad Music
Music has been around since the dawn of time. For hundreds of ears people have made music to express the emotions that they feel. Love, hate, happiness, anger, songs can be written about anything. From the love of a man for a woman to green Jell-O, music is human culture. Sometimes songs will make you want to dance as soon as you hear them. On the other hand, there are many songs that will anger people for their lyrical content. What are we to do with these songs? Some people argue that we should censor music. Censorship can limit the amount of free speech an artist has. Censorship is a word dreaded by many artists. No one like alterations of their own words, it is insulting when you are told that your opinion on sex is inappropriate. Who’s to blame? The artist, the industry, or are controlling parents the problem, “This is what totalitarianism is. It is not the will of someone inserting their will on the populace. It’s the will of the populace exerting its will on the populace.” (King Par. 7). Are we to blame for censorship? There have been many laws made dealing with censorship. A year ago after 9-11 radio stations around the nation started a list of songs. They listed songs that people felt were inappropriate to play on the airwaves after the terrorist attacks. “The list compiled to over 150 songs. Some songs listed for obvious reasons such as Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” and Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” Some artists were shocked when a song written about peace and love was denied because it had only a few words that offended. MTV could possibly be to blame. The “Jackass” era has created a world of utter chaos. People stapling things to them, jumping out of moving cars, where does it all end? MTV is no stranger to wild antics. MTV has a history of events such as any Madonna video, or Lil’ Kim exposing half of her chest. MTV will always spark a censor to stay on their feet and question their etiquette. What are we to do? “There is no answer except to completely shelter your child from everything and anything in the everyday world.” (Dakotan Par. 9). If it was that easy than all we have to do is create a leash for kids. (The sad thing is that some people actually do make their kids wear a leash.)
