Beauty Is Seen Within
Beauty is defined as a delightful quality associated with such things as harmony of form, color, truthfulness, or originality. The views and ideas we all have of beauty are different. The quote “ Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,” is by an unknown author and shows what real beauty should be seen as. The person who wrote this is expressing that beauty, no matter what, is seen for who the person is and not their outward appearance. To say something so true must have took a lot of thought and understanding of what they truly believed. To get through life happily I believe we must believe this quote and understand people and love them for who they are. First impressions are said to be the most important, but are they? I don’t think so. You must get to know someone for who they are and learn the beauty in them. To support this quote I used various sources. Such as, the fable The Ugly Duckling, by Christian Anderson. The movie Beauty and the Beast, directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise. The book, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The song, “Unpretty” by TLC. The articles, “The eye of the beholder” by Trent and “The eye of the Beholder” by Bethany Patchin. The poems, “The Beauty of a Woman” by Ma
The article by Trent takes a sort of different view on what is beautiful. He goes to say that we should look at things for the beauty of them. Seeing beauty in the littlest things of nature and people. I do agree with him when he says, “They say man only sees what he wants to see.” Most people don’t really look deep into what is really there. Whether it is a person or a thing. “One man sees a tree that is no good for lumber, another man sees a good shade tree, and yet another sees a shapely tree of beauty that God made to house the birds so people might hear their wonderful songs. One man may see a hard rain that is not fit to drive in, another may see a blessing for his fields or garden, and yet another may see a summer shower in which to dance and sing with the frogs,” this is true. People see things in all different ways, but maybe we should try a little harder to see the views that others see too. This article also proves the point that we need to look at the inside of things and what they really mean, not always the looks of them. Beauty can be throughout all things no matter what. If something is ugly to one person it could be beautiful to another. My last source was a personal interview with my friend Donny. He answered my questions very truthfully, and took his time to think. First I asked him what true beauty was to him. He told me that its when a girl is really sweet, nice to him, and has a nice smile and that they were also fun to be with and easy to talk to. The next question I asked him was about his experiences with beauty that proved it was not only skin deep to him. Donny said he his ex-girlfriend was beautiful to him after awhile but not at first. He learned that her inner beauty was much greater than her outer beauty could ever be. The third question I asked him was about how he thought people looked at beauty as an outward feature and if he ever was like that. Donny stated that most guys that he knows want a girl with great looks and a great body, not really caring about the insides. He said he does do that sometimes but once he realizes it he tries to steer away from it, knowing that its not worth it. Donny also said when I asked to give me descriptive words about a beautiful person to him he said; gets his attention, interesting, and has a nice voice. Donny said beauty was something you can be born with but you can also achieve and work at, when I asked him about it. His definition of beauty was that he feels as though that it’s important to click with a person, and have the feeling that you can trust them right away. When Donny heard the quote his feelings were that it’s a very true statement because no matter what one person can think someone is totally ugly but another can think they are just beautiful person. He said that this quote reminds him that it doesn’t matter what others think, it just matters that the person he’s with is beautiful to him. Donny proves this quote through and through. His beliefs on beauty are very similar to mine, that’s great. Imagine being a woman looked down upon as ugly because of having a kid before marriage. I know I would feel just awful and my self-esteem would be very low. The town didn’t really get to know her for her, they just thought of her has the Scarlet letter “A,” being for adultery. Think of how she feels; lonely, depressed, exc. Looking down bad upon someone because of a mistake they made is not right. She was a beautiful person just no one knew it because they didn’t look at her for that. This book is an example of this quote because they didn’t look at her for what they were supposed to, only for what she had done.
