Big Sister
I sat quietly on the couch with my father. His short muscular arm extended over my head, as if he were trying to protect me from something. His fingers got lost in my ponytails, and I yanked my head forward to signal that I did not want him to play in my hair. My father knelt down and kissed me gently on my forehead and said, “Don’t worry, sweetheart, Mommy will…there she is now!” I got up and ran to the front window as quickly as my tiny little legs could move. My fingertips grasped the windowsill and my little nose pressed against the windowpane. I was too late; I could already hear my mother’s footsteps coming up the stairs onto the porch. She opened the door and I threw myself into her arms. My mother said, “Ashli honey, Mommy is very tired. Please be a little more careful next time. I have a surprise for you.” She said. “What is it Mommy and where is it at?” I exclaimed as I jumped rapidly around the kitchen. My mind raced with questions as to what it could be. Was it a Mickey Mouse teddy bear? Was it a new Atari game? A Barbie car that I can drive? It has to be because every time
I quietly ran up the stairs and went to the place where only I existed, and no one else mattered, my closet. I cried allowing all of my tears to come bellowing out of my irritated, red eyes. I lay there on the cold, hardwood floor and continued crying my heart out until I heard my mother’s footsteps enter the room. I went to Toys ‘R Us, I would always point it out to my parents. All I could think about was the day that I would no longer be the FIRST to go down Grandpa’s slide on those hot, summer days. My toys would no longer be MINE. I would no longer matter anymore. I would become a ghost. My mother gripped my hand tightly and led me slowly into the living room. She sat me down gently next to my father.
