Keeping Off the Streets

Purpose: My purpose in writing this essay is to research the problem with the sport of illegal street racing and to propose solutions so my readers will be convinced that, although seen by many as a dangerous and harmful activity, it is actually full of custom, tradition and history, and racers should be given designated places to race in order to keep them off the streets.

Audience: It shows how although 18- to 25-year-olds make up the core of the illegal street racing culture, the trend cuts across all races, as well as both genders and is made up of mostly middle class people with a high school reading level that are from the United States.

Thesis: Due to many annual deaths caused by street racing, track owners and/or businessmen should open up a safe place to race, were there is less chance for accidents with spectators and racers.

Illegal street racing has been going on for many years. Authorities are trying to stop it by giving out harsh penalties and fines to violators caught. Street racing involves the use of cars and/or motorbikes racing on a quite street, usually an industrial area because there is less traffic and a lower chance of police catching the r

Stopping the racers really is not an option, but rather giving them a safe place to go is, "Within the last three to four years it's doubled if not more in popularity," said Justin Lim an auto shop worker (Justin Lim). Some solutions are that they could open up drag racing tracks for

annual deaths caused by street racing, track owners or businessmen should open up a safe place to race were there is less chance for accidents with spectators or other racers.

Also a good idea might be to open up a designated street at night for the racers to go and have it monitored by an authority figure to make sure it doesn’t get out of control. This would mean they could go somewhere local and race for free in the same environment they do now, just without any illegal gambling. The only problem with this is that they are still racing at high speeds.

Also, another good option would be that anyone caught racing would lose his or her car for a period of time. After a long period of time they would be limited to drive certain cars or have to have their car taken in and be restricted to a speed limit under 90mph by a professional mechanic. If the car were to try and pass the restricted speed limit it would shut off for an hour so that the driver would be stuck waiting until the car turned back on, that would make him not want to try that again.
