The Red Badge of Courage
1. Crane, Stephen. The Red Badge of Courage Tor Books; Reissue edition (July 1997), Fiction, 319 pagesSummary: The Red Badge of Courage is an exciting story of a young boy, Henry Fleming, who joins the Union Army because he wants to be remembered for his brave deeds. His mother stalls him for sometime until he signs up. He joins the 304th New York Regiment. After some disappointment because of no fighting, he is suddenly caught in many battles. He is so frightened that he cannot shoot. Soon after wards he gets used to it as his regiment fights more battles. As it gets deeper into the story, many of Henry's friends are killed in battle. Evaluate Review: This is a great book to use during a Civil War unit. The plot of the story is identified with the Civil War but as one reads deeper is about fears, hopes, and dreams of a youth caught up in the war. All Students can relate to this book because they are around the same age as the main character. The language is very descriptive and really puts the reader in the book. I would recommend this book for students in grades 8-12. I think that anyone younger than that will not truly appreciate this book. 2. Forbes, Ester. Johnny Treamin, Yearling Books; Reissue edition (May 1, 1
5. Stowe, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Tom’s Cabin Bantam Classics; Reissue edition (January 1, 1983) Fiction, 451 pages Evaluative Review: This book is a must for teaching slavery. The book is small but has tons of important information regarding the life of a slave. Douglass’s account is so moving that it will touch every student in the class. This book helps students realize the strides, we as a country, have accomplished from the time of slavery. Evaluative Review: “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is another book that deals with slavery. The book is somewhat long but well worth the read. Again, students will be able to comprehend the life and times of a slave. This book can assist in the teaching of slavery. Evaluative Review: Johnny Tremain is a terrific book that can be used to in an American Revolutionary War unit. This book is primarily used for middle school but is great because students can relate to a character like Johnny. Throughout the book, Johnny is in the middle of the action. From the first shot at the battle of Lexington and Concord to the Boston Tea Party, Johnny is there every step of the way. This book truly puts you in the American Revolutionary War.
