The caged bird could be someone stuck in a hated job, and wants to switch professions. Yet, they would have to go back to school, or maybe the desired job is too low paying and their family is relying on their pay to survive. Thus, they cannot switch jobs, because they, and their family, do not want to starve. Millions of people sit in prisons, and no doubt virtually all of them would like to be set free, and more often than not the things they miss are very simple, like a home-cooked meal, their families, and the freedom to go where they please. Just the caged bird envying the free bird because it can fly and move and do what it will.
