Can a Women do a Mans Job Better?
Is it fair that men make more money than women do, even though they both have the same qualifications? Is it fair that women are less likely than men to get promoted are? Is it fair that women will start at lower positions in the work place than men do? Discrimination in the work place is widening the already large gender gap in today’s modern society. If in this country where we are all to be created equally then why is it that on average for every dollar a man earned a women made 73 cents in 1998? You probably thought that I was going to say 1940, but no this was only five years ago. At this rate of pay the average 25 year old working women will lose more than $523,000 of unequal pay in her entire life according to the AFL-CIO. With this women will have fewer savings in their pensions than men will when it comes time for retirement. And if that’s not sickening enough to you you will be amazed to know that the gap that you thought was large for women in general is even worse for the women minorities in this country. African American women and Latino women, reported by the AFL_CIO make 58 cents to each male earned dollar. (cnn.com) Women all over the world are getting sick and tired of missing out on job opportunities and b
eing treated unfairly by the employers and not because they are not qualified, but because they are women. It’s only natural to think that an employer would make a decision on who is better qualified for a position based on their skills not their sex. When it comes to hiring, promotions, and salaries are the three key and main factors that separate the men from the women in the work place. In hiring, men are much more likely to get a job than women are. Although in the last 10 to 15 years, women have gradually tried to decrease the gaps in education it really has not made a substantial difference in equality for them. In 1974, 14 to 25% of women earned bachelor degrees in computer areas and mathematical science. While in 1989, the women that earned the same degrees were 33 to 37% of the graduates. (Frenkel, 1990) Now after the increase of earned degrees by women common sense would lead you to believe that the hiring increase rate of hiring for women in the workplace would increase as well. Think again, the hiring of women has only increased about 5%. What is the main reason for this incremental change, are women’s bachelor degrees not as valuable, or is it that employers are just not taking into consideration the persons skills. The real question is does a man even need a degree to be qualified or is it who he knows that makes him qualified or not? I believe that women fight for the rights just as much as they did in the past and just because we live in a modern society there are people that still have ignorant mind sets about women staying in the kitchen and the man earning the money. During World War II thousands of women entered the workforce and did so call men’s work due to the labor shortage of me due to the draft. IF women were good enough then, then they sure as hell are more than good enough now I don’t think employers have a sort of obligation to hire the women, but in most cases when it comes time to electing a new president, the thought of her being female sounds like oil and wate
