Cannondale Corporation
The Cannondale Corporation was founded in 1971 by Joseph Montgomery. Just as Bill Gates is for Microsoft, Joseph Montgomery is both the founder and CEO. Cannondale is based in Connecticut with manufacturing facilities in Bedford, Pennsylvania and subsidiaries in Japan, Holland, and Australia. Cannondale’s initial product was the industry’s first bicycle trailer. In 1983, the company raised industry eyebrows by introducing their first “affordable” aluminum framed bicycle. What made the bicycle so unique was its durable, flex-resistant aluminum tubing that the frame was made of. The new design proved to out perform industry standard bikes that were made of steel frames. Today, Cannondale sells more than 90 different bicycle models in over 60 countries . Not only are they industry leaders in bicycle engineering and development, but in 1999 they ventured into motor powered bicycles when they introduced their 432cc Motocrosser aluminum bicycle. In addition to this breakthrough, Cannondale followed up in 2000 with its FX400 ATV (All Terrain Vehicle). Cannondale also makes bicycle accessories such as CODA and HeadShok suspension forks and apparel.
“Trek is the #1 maker of high-end bikes, which it sells through independent specialty bike shops. Trek makes mountain, road, children's, recumbent, police, and BMX bikes. Trek customers pay top dollar for innovations in racing geometry, smooth suspensions, and custom paint. In addition to high-performance bicycles, the company sells gear and clothing. Trek Bicycle, established by Richard Burke in 1976, sponsors racing teams and athletes, including Lance Armstrong, four-time winner (1999-2002) of cycling's grandest race, the Tour de France. The Burke family controls Trek Bicycle.” “Giant Manufacturing has peddled its way to the top of the bicycle industry. As the largest bicycle maker in Taiwan, Giant Manufacturing is moving up in the worldwide bicycle market at a time when the top bike brands, such as those made by Huffy and bankrupt Derby Cylce, are struggling. The company's Giant-branded bikes range in price from $200 to $4,000 and are sold in cycle shops in more than 50 countries as well as 17 company-owned stores. Giant Manufacturing also makes bikes for other popular brands with its four manufacturing facilities in Taiwan, China, and Europe. (The company once made bikes for defunct Schwinn/GT.) Chairman King Liu and his family own 40% of Giant Manufacturing.”
