Casino Review
The movie “Casino” is a story of how the mob won and lost Las Vegas. Martin Scorsese is a master in film making, skilled especially in the manipulation of imagery. “Casino” has a heroic ending, it’s just short of three hours, and while the central plot advances slowly the film is filled with the amazing details of what is involved in running a major casino. There are a lot of scenes but is easy to fallow. There is a constant alertness of how greedy, violent and selfish society is, similar to another great hit “Godfather.” Robert DeNiro is the star in "Casino" and he plays Sam "Ace" Rothstein, a smart man from the east coast who's handpicked by the mob to run the new Tangiers hotel and casino in Vegas. Ace is the perfect man for the job he’s taken absolute power and changes the way casinos are run. Now the Tangiers is turning over more money than ever before, and Ace is the favorite businessman in the country. Of course by nature when you're in power, no good thing lasts forever, and Ace runs into some problems. Under Ace’s direction the casino turns into an illegal operation where millions are taken from the tables. He has a hard time controlling Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) who is his old friend. He has a temper
Technically the film looks wonderful. The wide screen cinematography is simply dazzling. The music scenes are perfect and set a mood, perfectly match the setting. The rise and fall of the plot is presented in a gradual arch. The costumes and production designs are skillfully detailed. The lighting in the movie is like a typical mob movie, dark brownish atmosphere. The camera view is from an outsider’s perspective where another person is watching. The camera is slow paced during the long dialogues in the film but picks up some speed in action violent scenes. There is no bad acting in Casino. Stone might have played the most complex role of her career and looks to be pretty good at it. She acted a new image being an alcoholic and cocaine addict. Most of her movies have been terrible, but she does have talent and absolutely beautiful looks. De Niro is one of the best actors alive today; he’s acted as a similar character played before. Pesci's violent thug character is very much the same he played in “Goodfellas”, but more violent and cruel in Casino. Woods was a wasted loser where he did his short and sweet role. Pesci was a little too out of control as if being on some kind of drug throughout the movie, but it still was good acting. No matter what angle you look at Casino it’s still a wonderful
