Chemistry Of Performance Enhancing Drugs

Chemistry of Performance Enhancing Drugs

Athletes use performance-enhancing drugs in order to get an edge off of their compatriots and rivals. These performance-enhancing drugs are used at various levels from secondary to international. There is no general rule or guideline for the use of these drugs in athletic competitions but there are specific guidelines for each organization. There are some organizations that ban the use of these aids by athletes, then there are others that don’t, however these products tempt athletes to achieve an edge over their competitors.

Many of these products are available over the counter and there is a massive market for these products resulting in about three billion per year and growing. These products are considered to be “dietary supplements”. “Since the Food and Drug Administration do not approve them there is no protection from any possible dangerous side effects or other health risks to the consumer.” The following was taken from www.google.com, the link performance enhancing drugs.

In 1998 over $200 million of creatine products were sold.Creatine provides your body with more energy when you work your muscles to fatigue. It is much more beneficial to the athlete who does sprinting, weight lifting and quick burst of energy. For endurance athletes it is less clear what creatine can do. If you are working out harder most people see positive results within the first month. If you do not see any results and you are using a quality creatine supplement you may not be a responder to creatine.some people have such a high baseline level of creatine that supplementing does not do anything for them.
