Circling Vultures
The setting of any short story, novel or poem involves the time, place and mood created by the author in order to grasp our attention. The time in the novel Circling Vultures is in the “summer” and I can infer that the story takes place in the “1990’s”. The story takes place on the dry, dusty lands of “the vast East African grasslands” on a wildlife “Game Park”. One mood of the story is sadness. It is sad because many animals are being killed by poachers for their furs, claws etc. “A female leopard and her cubs live up there. I bet poachers have killed them”. The other mood is hope. The hope is that the game wardens are fighting and winning the on-going battle between them and the poachers. They are trying to protect the wildlife for future generations; “that’s two more poachers locked away”. The plot of a narrative is a series of incidents that provides a solid framework for the narratives conflict. A conflict is a struggle between two opposing forces that can be resolved in three different ways, conquest, compromise and complete destruction. The two forces in the conflict is man vs. man. The 2 characters I’ve chosen from this novel are Jason and Peter. Jason’s physical characteristics are, he has “short brown hair”, has a “dark brown tan” and he is short “his brother towered over him”. Peter’s physical characteristics are, he is “ebony”, “Peter was strong” and has “dark brown eyes”. Jason’s mental characteristics is that he is caring “he sat uncomfortably in the back seat calming the leopard cubs”, he is smart “quick, apply pressure to stop the bleeding” and he is “very helpful”. The author was very descriptive in his creation of his characters, which enabled me to clearly picture them in my mind.
