Essay on Brave New World

When reading the novel,Brave New World,? I found the character John to be someone who was alienated from his society, in this case both he tried to take part in, because of his culture and beliefs. John, son of the Director and Linda, was born in the World State culture. He lived his entire life at an Indian reservation because he and Linda were exiled from the World State when John was young. The Indians don't accept him and don't allow him to participate in their rituals because he wasn't born into their culture. He also finds himself separated from the World State culture because the people of the World State believe the Indians to be savage, unworldly beings and don't understand why John wants to participate in their rituals.
John also finds the desire to see the world through Shakespeare, for it was one of the books he learned to read from. He constantly quotes his work and it seems to take John away from the reality of people and their essentially immoral values. An example of this would be Lenina, who's only way of communicating with men is through sex, much like the rest of her society. She is also uses soma, an extremely potent, chemically created drug. John, oddly, sees her as the ultimate hero. .
When visited at the reservation by characters Bernard Marx and Lenina, John is convinced by them to visit the World State that his mother Linda had told him about so often. When John sees London, he seems to be overwhelmed. Bernard introduces John to Helmholtz, who finds John's beliefs in true love and family are ridiculous, but instantly finds him to be a friend. The ideas John speaks of, found in the story of Romeo and Juliet, are not found in World State society. .
Linda's death also seemed to have affected John's view of the World State's open use of soma, rationed by the government. When Linda dies from it, John throws out all the others rations and an uprising of the people occurs.
