One-time Duke of Milan, Prospero, scholar and student of magic arts, has been deposed by his brother, Antonio, with the help of an inveterate enemy, Alonso, King of Naples. Prospero was a man who had disliked power. The conspirators had cought himunawares and he and his only child, his infant daughter, Miranda, were then consigned to a rotten hulk, so unseaworthy that the rats themselves had instinctively deserted it and thrust out across the open sea. Caliban, however, although Prospero had first befriended him and taught him the use of language, had attacked Miranda's virtue, so that Prospero had condemned the brutish creature to become their household slave. Ariel serves his master gladly while Caliban perpetually rages against his state of servitude. He is now entirely alone, and he likens his fate to that of one of the wretched animals kept to be baited and eventually done to death, in an English bear-garden. Iago persuades Othello that his wife, Desdemona, has become the mistress of his lieutenant, Cassio, ans id t
