Comedy Of Errors Critique
Critique : “The Comedy of Errors”On Saturday March 29, 2003 I saw a production of “The Comedy of Errors,” written by William Shakespeare, at The Hilberry Theatre. Overall, I enjoyed this play. By far it was the best of the three Wayne State University performances I experienced this semester. However, there were many scenes in the play that I found confusing. The day after the play, I read the script to gain a deeper understanding of some of these situations within the play. After seeing this production, I was pleased with certain aspects of the play and displeased with others First, the pre-play experience was very energetic. As the audience gathered I felt that there was a much more positive energy and enthusiasm for the production than there was at the two performances I saw at The Bonstelle Theatre earlier this semester. The seating was almost completely full and there also appeared to be more variety in age. Throughout the play, the inter audience rapport was positive. There were many points were the audience laughed and there were very few people sleeping during the show! My main criticism of play “The Comedy of Errors” is the writing of the script. The language style used was very complicated for me to
Moreover, I also felt that the lighting design added to the ambiance of this play. Light was used well for dramatic effect when the time changed from day to night. Visibility and focus, the primary considerations of lighting design were also accomplished successfully in the production of this play. The characters were always lit so that they were visible without distraction. Even though I found the plot hard to follow due to the Shakespearean language, I really enjoyed the actor’s performances in this production of “The Comedy of Errors.” I feel that the actors did an excellent job with their characters. Another positive attribute of this performance was the actor’s costumes. For example, the red dress worn by The Courtesan (Shelly Gaza) portrayed the individuality of her character’s role in this play. I enjoyed the variety of costumes used in this production. However, I don’t feel that the costumes used serve as a good historical marker. There is such a variety that I would have a difficult time guessing when this was supposed to be historically. First, I did feel the play was intriguing. I was in suspense of what would happen next throughout the entire performance, even with the parts that were confusing to me. I think that the play was written with richness, good depth of characterization, and celebration. However, I think that this play severely lacks in speakability, as the dramatic dialogue written by Shakespeare does not closely resemble ordinary speech. In addition, I also enjoyed the fine performances from Christi Marsico (Adriana) and Amanda Jones (Luciana) - the hapless sisters who get caught up in the confusion. Also, Shelly Gaza’s performance as The Courtesan really stood out for me. She was delightfully convincing in her role as The Courtesan, slinking across the stage and draping herself around her house of ill rep
