Dalcroze
Music education has come along way from where it started. There are many people that had an influence on this revelation of the way music is taught today. Emil Jaques-Dacroze is one of the individuals that had an enormous impact on music education. Dalcroze was born in 1865 in Vienna, Austria. His display of musical interest led to receiving piano lessons early in his childhood. In 1875, his family moved to Geneva, where Dalcroze continued his studies. Musical and theatrical interests drew him to Paris in 1884. This is where he studied composition with Faure and drama with Talbot. Talbot was a member of the Comedie Francaise. In 1886, Dalcroze was employed as an orchestra conductor in a theatre in Algiers. This experience had a lasting effect on his later work. As a conductor, he gained insight into relationship between music and physical gesture. As a composer, he was intrigued with the different rhythm system used in Arabic. After leaving Algiers, Dalcroze spent two years at the Academy of music in Vienna. This is where he studied harmony, counterpoint, and composition with Al Bruckner. In 1889 he returned to Paris. In the upper grades, the object for eurhythmics experiences should be aimed at the development of the students’ independence in listening, performing and creating. The emphasis on independence in participation allows the students to respond with understanding and confidence. Those students who pursue music in the future will have developed basic skills and understanding which they will use the rest of their lives. In eurhythmics the student is trained to reduce to a minimum, the muscular activity of each limb, then gradually to apply its powers. If the student lies on there back they relax their whole body and concentrates their attention on breathing and then on the contraction of their limb. They are then taught to contract simultaneously two or more limbs. This allows them to acknowledge their muscular resistance, and to eliminate those that do not apply.
