Cyber Criminals

A young teen calling himself “Mafiaboy” was arrested in Montreal, Canada early April of 2000. His crime? He was charged with at least one of the Denial-Of-Service (DoS) hacker attacks that blocked access to such popular sites as Yahoo!, Amazon, and eBay. –“Dembeck” Thirty years ago, a juvenile delinquent like “Mafiaboy” would be reduced to say, setting a mailbox on fire or some other adolescent prank. Now, with today’s technology, his “adolescent prank” disrupted world wide E-commerce and attracted massive media attention.

Hackers like “Mafiaboy” are becoming more and more abundant these days, and are finding more innovative ways to accomplish their wide variety of goals. Their goal may be to send a virus to the computer of someone they dislike. Some of these “Cyber Criminals” hack into websites and destroy information, others hack into government or company computers, steal money and information, pirate software and more.

There are many forms of computerized crime; most computer crime can be traced back to one common tool (besides a computer of course) the Internet. Yes, the same information super-highway that is used by millions of people everyday has become, to a hacker, nothing more than a gatew

dangerous weapon that threatens that same commerce and even the security of the civilized world.

§ 78% detected employee abuse of internet access privileges

It wasn’t until the late 1980’s that the name hacker was closely associated with computers, and it didn’t become common to the public until probably within the last ten years. Now, it is likely that if you ask anyone in today’s society ages ten through sixty what a hacker is, the answer will probably pertain to computerized crime in some way or another.

§ 85% acknowledged financial losses do to hacking

Every day company’s and government agencies all over the world suffer from hacker attacks, and every day hackers get away with it. Why can’t these people be caught? Because although technology is constantly improving and making it harder for the common hacker to gain access to protected information, hackers are also constantly learning new ways to get around this technology, sometimes using it for their benefit. There are actually programs like Sub-7 and Red hat Linux that aid these hackers in their quest for information, destruction, or sometimes just a way to vent their urge to be heard. Whatever a hacker is after, thanks to today’s technology, he usually either gets it, or walks to try again another day. This is the main problem with computerized crime, the criminals are too safe to be shied away from committing it. For instance, even if you had an urge to go out and rob a bank, you probably wouldn’t out of fear of getting caught, right? In the case of computer crime, a hacker usually knows that not only can he get away with it, he probably can get into and out of the bank undetected, and by the time the money is found missing, it will already be withdrawn and the criminal will be safe, thanks to their sweeper programs, tracers, IP randomizers, and various other tools that aid the hacker in their shadow games. It is essentially these “shadow games” that make a hacker so hard to catch, and so dangerous.
