Daily Deviance;s Base
The medium of television has had a drastic change on the communication of our society. From television, our society has developed what we consider pop culture. In it’s beginning’s, television, portrayed society from an idealist’s standpoint. Television producers thought they had the responsibility of creating idealistic family’s and lives, from which society could gather what should be “normal”. However, over the course of the last half century, television has grown drastically in its influence, and what programming is about. The programs of yesteryear promoted family values, loyalty, and love. Today’s programs promote promiscuous sex, violence, and cheating to get your way. Not that television is totally to blame, but, it has certainly played the largest role of any medium in what our society considers deviance, and normalcy. In the 1950’s television programming was aimed at families. After a long day at work or school, a family could sit down together after dinner, and enjoy an hour of television together. When one looks at this situation today, it is comical to find that a married couple could not share the same bed, when it seems more common to find an unmarried couple sharing a bed. Society accepted this new behavior as normal, and has continually changed what is acceptable as wider ranges of behavior, once considered deviant, are mixed into the popular culture. The point being made it not necessarily that society is going to hell in a hand basket, nor is it that all behavior should be marked as deviant. Simply put, it is that our culture is ever changing because it is so young. If as a society, we find certain acts despicable we must take a stand against them. If parents feel something is inappropriate, they should explain how it is deviant, and instill their values upon their children, instead of letting television be their children’s only guide. Each individual has a say as to what is deviant, and can still have the power to change what we accept as normal. One would then speculate th
