DANIEL HALE WILLIAMS
This report is on the life of a renown black Doctor by the name of Daniel Hale Williams. He was very instrumental in the medical industry. I will attempt to inform you of his accomplishments as well as his concerns for his patients. Dr. Daniel Hale Williams Dr. Daniel Hale Williams was born on January 18, 1856 in Hollidayspurg, Pennsylvania, and died on August 4, 1931. When he was nine years old, his father died of Tuberculosis. His mother Sarah Price Williams moved the family to Baltimore to live with relatives. Daniel spent three years in an apprenticeship with a shoemaker in Baltimore. By age 17, he had also studied and become a successful barber and lived with the Anderson family in Janesville, Wisconsin where he worked in their barber-shop. Medical Association (NMA), which was at the time, the only national organization open to black physicians. He was nominated as first vice president. In 1902 he performed another breakthrough operation, successfully suturing a patient’s spleen. rate and a large number of surgical cases. In December 1895, he helped organize the National In 1896, a friend of Dr. Williams, Judge Walter Q. Grisham, requested that he apply for the position of surgeon-in-chief at Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington D.C. He then served at Freedmen’s Hospital from 1894 until 1898. While holding this position, he established an internship program for graduate physicians and helped guide other improvements leading to a decline in the hospital mortality He became a visiting professor of surgery at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, one of two black medical schools in the country at that time.
