1. What changes did you see in the group and in the characteristics of individuals?At the beginning of the film after the ceremony, the students are going through a forming stage where they are sharing polite conversation and are trying to know each other. Even on this stage Neil and Todd are already emerging as playing prominent roles in the movie. · John Keating is the English professor who is introduced during the opening ceremony and has unconventional ways of teaching. He teaches his students to write poetry to express their feelings and to think for themselves. His passion was language and ideas, he believes in individuality and freedom. His character does not seem to change much during the movie, he is firm to his believes and use all kind of unorthodox methods to show the students not to conform even, to strive to be themselves even when other will disapprove. · Neil Perry is a very popular student, bright and high achieving, he has a passion for acting but seems afraid of his overbearing father. He starts changing his priorities and getting more courage after Keating start teaching him on the importance of after discovering Keating’s senior annual and learning about the “Dead Poets Societ
· Charles Dalton is always the one to get in trouble and uses Keating’s teachings as and excuse to rebel. He is the one to bring two girls to the Dead Poets Society meeting and dares to write an article for the school paper demanding for girls to be admitted into the school. During the movie his character turns more daring after Keating’s teachings. Some of the students reacted in a positive way to changes but the older people had a harder time accepting the changes and the fact that Keating was using such unorthodox methods of teaching leveling with the students, showing and telling them that he believes in the truth. Nolan, the school’s principal seems to be the one that has the hardest time with the changes that Keating is doing in the classroom. In the scene where Nolan sees the students marching and clapping he tells Keating that the school’s curriculum is already set and it has been proven to work. He tells Keating that discipline and tradition will prepare them for college, not the idea of educating them to learn for themselves. Another positive effect with the changes is the methods that Keating was using that will attract the students to him and they will look up to him, but a negative effect is that Keating was expulsed from the school. Neil is the one that has the more trouble managing the changes and coping with the pressure and the stress that his father was putting on him. John Keating is the obvious leader in the movie; he is optimistic about making changes in other people’s lives to make them better. Keating encourages the students to write poems to express their feelings. Keating faces many difficulties in his quest to achieve his goals and even became the victim of Nolan and Perry who were afraid of changes, innovation and creativity. · Todd Anderson feels pressured for being the brother of a gifted person, he acts shy at first and is very insecure of his own skills.
