Death Of A Salesman ( CharacterS)
“Death of a Salesman” is a play that occurs over a 36-hour period. The play is organized into two different plots. The present day plot is in 1949 and the second plot, which are flashbacks, takes place in 1933. The Lomans live in Brooklyn in a house that they almost have paid off. The drama starts when Biff comes home from New York City to move In this play there are two protagonists and two antagonists. Since there are two plots in the play, they both have a protagonist and an antagonist. One plot is in 1949 and the other is in 1933. In 1949 the protagonist is Willy and the antagonist is Biff. Willy undergoes a change at the end of Act II, when he realizes that Biff really loves him. “Isn’t that remarkable? Biff- he likes me!” (Miller 1070). Willy never knew if Biff liked him or not. Biff is the antagonist because he expressed to his father that even though they do not get along, he still does love him. In 1933, Willy is the antagonist and Biff is the protagonist. Biff was a star football player in high school, with scholarships, but he flunked math his senior year and was not able to graduate. He was going to make the credit up during the summer, but he caught his father
Biff had an epiphany moment when he found out that his father was being unfaithful to his mother. Willy was in a hotel room with another women. Biff then walked in and found his father with another women. Biff was shocked. This is where Biff lost all respect for his father. Biff never viewed his father the same way again. Since Biff believed everything that his father told him, it changed everything that Biff believed in. Biff did not go to summer school so that he could graduate, because of his father. He moved away, and got caught stealing. The second epiphany moment is when Willy finds out that his son Biff loves him. Biff and Willy have one of their fights downstairs of their house. Biff is very angry with Willy, and he confronts Willy about the hose he found in the furnace. The hose, which no one talks about, is a way for Willy to kill himself. Biff broke down into his father’s arms and started crying. Willy asked Ben what he can give Biff to not have him hate him (Miller 1024). As Biff went upstairs Willy said to Linda “Isn’t that remarkable? Biff- he likes me!” (Miller 1070). Linda then explained to him that their boys have always loved him. The characters Happy and Biff are foils to the character Biff. Happy is Biff’s brother who no one takes serious. For example, he told his parents that he was getting married, but they ignored him (Miller 1011). Happy is always cheerful and doesn’t take anything seriously. Bernard is Biff’s neighbor and friend who he goes to school with. Bernard is smart and tries to help Biff with his schoolwork. Bernard ends up being a successful lawyer. Neither of the characters is like Biff. Biff is a confused thirty-four year old who doesn’t know what he
