Death Penalty

Dying a tragic death being chained behind a pickup truck and being dragged until your body separates into many pieces, is a death that James Byrd Jr. nor anyone else should have to go through. Cynthia Tucker says that America should not have the, “thirst for vengeance.” She seems to believe that those who are dumb and lack education are the one’s who cannot escape capital punishment, and the inmates who are educated and have connections find a way to avoid it. Tucker is against the death penalty because she believes that if one innocent life has been wrongly accused and has died for a crime that wasn’t committed by him or her, then that is one too many. I agree with Tucker because if there has been one wrongly accused “victim” that has died, then I believe our system has failed to protect the rights of the innocent.

Tucker is right in asking, “Does America deserve the death penalty?” Who are we to judge if someone should die or not? What divine right do we have to choose the fate of a person? Why not let the rightly accused criminal live in a dark cell with no pri

vileges until they die a natural death. To me that is more of a punishment that won’t let criminals get off easily with a fast, painless death. They will be paying for what they did everyday they are in jail. Those who are innocent and have been wrongly accused; time will eventually prove their innocence and will be freed. Imagine if they would have been on death row before new evidence was found that proved their innocence? There would be no going back to freeing an innocent, dead man.

A Chief Investigator from Monterey County says he strongly believes in the death penalty due to everything he has seen in his line of work. A story of a two year old girl who died because her mother and step father had brutally punched her and bitten her all over her body to make her stop crying, until she eventually died, makes him believe strongly in the death penalty. The Chief wanted the death penalty for these two criminals, but they got life in prison. I am glad this was the outcome because they did not get off so easily. They are now paying for what they did to the little girl everyday
