The current drug policy in the U.S. is obviously failing – miserably. Drug abuse is a widespread problem in the U.S. and the problem will only get worse. Besides making the government tons of money, if weed was legal it would also help out greatly in the medical community. It is already known that marijuana helps cancer patients by reducing nausea and increase appetite. It also reduces epileptic seizures and reduces nerve disorders in multiple sclerosis patients. Since there is no money in researching other uses of medicinal marijuana we don’t even know what other benefits this plant has. If there were any other drug that eased nausea, increased appetite, and reduced pain, it would probably be prescribed everywhere. But sadly it is a schedule one drug, and has “no medicinal purpose”. Yet cocaine and morphine are schedule two and do have medicinal value. If smoking pot helps sick patients feel better, it should be made legal for this reason alone. I can’t even find the words to describe how I feel about someone, such as a terminally ill cancer patient, being told they can’t light up to feel better just because our government is too stupid to reap the benefits of this plant. Even worse, good citizens are being arrested every day just because they are pot smokers.

Another great benefit that legalizing marijuana would bring is hemp production. This is something that is often overlooked in the fight for legalization. Hemp was largely used for many things 150 years ago. I even heard that the first draft of the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper. Hemp can be used to make clothing, paper, rope, and methanol fuel. It is also much stronger and much more durable than regular cotton. It is also safer for the environment.
