Depressants

Depressant: Any of a large group of drugs that depresses the central nervous system and at high doses induces sleep. This includes chloral hydrate, barbiturates, methaqualone, benzodiazepines, and the most popular, alcohol. While doing my research on depressants alcohol seemed to be the “depressant” that came up the most.

Alcohol is the most widely used and abused drug today. Over 100 billion dollars is spent on alcohol per year in America. 103 million people in the U.S are current drinkers and 11 million are heavy drinkers. It is especially widely used amongst high school and college aged students. Obviously we all know the legal drinking age is 21 years old, but it is amazing how often that law is broken. Drinking alcohol can lead to risky behaviors and can get you into trouble. Five out of ten times you drink you will regret something that happened, if you even remember. There is also many ways alcohol can kill you. For one, getting into a car is extremely dangerous because your ability to think straight has been impaired. Drinking and driving is close to the leading cause of death in the U.S. You take an extremely high risk of ending your life in a very painful way every time you do it. Then, there is the chance you might experience a blackout. You are capable of doing anything and everything dangerous when you are in this situation. You could be running out in front of traffic or playing with dangerous objects and not even know it. Some people may have the mentality “oh, well, it is what I want to do and it only affects me, so I am going to do it.” Wrong, drinking alcohol affects everyone around you. You may be the one to kill 4 or 5 people that you swore t
