Dictator
Throughout time, tracing back to long before any records were kept and farther than the mind can imagine, in the world of men there has always been rulers and servants. It is in man’s nature to rule over other men, such as the philosopher Thomas Hobbes suggests in the Leviathan, “men are self-seeking” and want to “make themselves master of other men’s person, wives, children and cattle.” (Sterba, p142). There have been successful rulers and there has been anarchy. There is no written law or foolproof way on how to be a successful ruler. Niccolo Machiavelli however has written a guideline on how to rule. In his book, The Prince, Machiavelli laid the ground work on what one needs to do to be a successful, also suggestions on how gain power and how to maintain it once its been achrived. The Prince however is not a bible of any sort; it’s merely serves as a guide, somewhat like the Dos and Don’ts of power, which could be titled “Dictators for Dummies,” if it was written today. Many past and present dictators or rulers made have not read Machiavelli’s The Prince, but many of them have practiced what he has suggested and pointed out in his book and have been very successful because
As soon as Hitler was given power over the state of Germany, he soon began on his conquest of power. As Machiavelli advices, one of the first things that Hitler did was to silence those that revolted or opposed him; the means which he did was to kill them. All that opposed him were either killed or placed in jail, thus he was securing his position. The next thing Hitler did was established leadership and a sense of power to his people and his neighbor. He did this by first conquering neighboring states and also by posing a threat to them, they all feared him. Hitler started off conquering small defenseless states that surrounded Germany, it was also to his advantage that those states once belong to Germany before the first World War and many of those states spoke German. Machiavelli suggest that states that spoke the same language are easier to control once conquered, the culture are similar and as long as their way of life does not exhibit extraordinary changes, they will not pose any problems. Hitler was able to gain power and momentum quickly as he was able to win swift military victories over his neighbor as the world stood by and watch, Hitler gain more and more support from his people with every victory. The only thing left for Hitler to do to establish his power was to weaken his neighbor who were strong and would pose a threat to him, England and France. France fell quickly and easily, and so most of Europe was in Hitler’s hand. Hitler than made a mistake that would cost him everything. Hitler’s down fall was that he thought he could win it all and have it all; he made a few mistakes that Machiavelli warned about. One of the first mistakes that he made was being too arrogant, he fought too many battles at once, spreading his armies too much and the second and the fatal mistake was in alliances. Machiavelli warned that one should only keep allies for as long as they are still useful. His first mistake was with Italy, they were a weak nation that fell quickly and the second was Japan. Japan earlier in the war was a powerful ally, but because of Japan, the German had to engagement in war with the United States too. Thus making the world united against him. If Hitler had known his own boundaries and the limitation, he could have spent his life ruling a fairly big and powerful nation, instead he went too far and did too much and committed too many fatal mistakes which cost him everything. Hitler was a man who made all the right moves, yet committed all the wrong ones too. How does one become a price or a ruler? According to Machiavelli, one can inherit the position, such as a prince would inherit the throne from his father, the King. Inheriting power is the much easier to rule than taking over a new state. If one were to inherit power, all he would need is to know is the tradition and keep inline with them. Therefore it’s much easier for the ruler, he would know what the people expect and the rule has already been established for him. Another reason why it would be easier is that the people of that state would already be familiar with the family and can come to expect what the new ruler would be like. In modern day there are not many monarchies left, but in a sense democracy is a form of in heritage. For example, the presidential pool in the United States is very limited, not everyone can be president nor have the chance. In many ways, those in the senate or those who hold political power in the United States can be compared to the aristocrats of the past. They usually hold political power for life and their children would more than likely inherit their father’s seat, if he should decide go into politics. There may not be a direct line into the Presidency, but it’s still limited to selected few. Presidential candidates can be view as Princes, it just a matter of who gets chosen. Franklin Delano Roosevelt happened to be one of the chosen o
