Annabel Lee
The poem “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allen Poe depicts the deep anguish of a man who has lost the love of his life. The tone of this poem is sad and depressing, yet there is an undeniable feeling of hope that the power of the couple’s love truly managed to rise above the forces that tried to defeat it. The tone is also laced with blame and bitterness, but there is always a sense of love and beauty intertwined. Because the poem begins like a fairytale, the tone, initially, is very deceptive. We are fooled into believing there will be a happy ending. It is not until the tone takes a sudden turn in the second stanza, that we realize this will not be the case. The imagery in the poem is beautiful throughout, with the exception of the wind, which “came out of a cloud” and killed her. Images of the young couple living in a breathtaking kingdom by the sea, angels, a love powerful enough to conquer all, and the heavens, give connotations of a captivating, fairytale.
