Once a long time ago the legendary scholar the Ari had a brother in law who was a revered scholar in his own right. He and his wife had one son. The son was very studious and made everyone proud. But on the evening before his son’s Bar Mitzvah, the brother in law had a dream in which a frail old man leaned over and told him “your son has the capacity to be a great scholar but if at any point his desires lead him elsewhere you must let him do whatever he wishes and not stand in his way. The son grew up and indeed was a great student. He quickly rose to the top of his yeshiva class and was well respected for his depth in understanding and his eloquent discussions. But at the age of 17, the son came before his father and proclaimed, “Father, I thank you for all my years of study, but I feel a burning need to travel and learn the ways of the world. I have learned so much in these years of study, but I want to experience the world outside as well.” The father remembered the dream, and though it was painful to let his son go, to his son’s surprise, he did not stand in his way. At that moment, the groom turned around with a radiant smile and walked back with great serenity towards the chupah. The chupah was raised and the two recited their vows. Everyone agreed that they had never experienced a wedding quite like this one. Afterwards, they rejoiced and danced and a great heaping platter was prepared for the old man. But when they searched for him, he was nowhere to be found. That is when they realized that that old man was none other than Elijah the Prophet. And indeed Elijah had come to bring these two together, to live out the rest of their lives as one.
