Does Age Really Matter

“Prohibition makes you want to cry in your beer, and denies you the beer to cry into.” This quote by Don Marquis conveys how a large majority of teenagers, as well as people of legal drinking age, feel about the laws prohibiting alcohol to people under twenty-one. These people want the legal drinking age lowered from twenty-one to eighteen. They feel like, if a person is old enough to vote and fight for their country, then they should be able to have an alcoholic beverage if they choose. Opposers to this ideal think that the law should stay as it is because they feel that people under twenty-one are not mature enough to drink responsibly. I have taken the side of the opposers.

The legal drinking age should not be anything but twenty-one and older. Seventy percent of all teenagers drink alcohol [First Eagle], which they have no business doing. They don’t know how to drink responsibly and they don’t know why it is people drink. They drink in order to get buzzed or drunk, instead of drinking for the flavor of the alcohol. A drink is not made with the cup having 70% liquor

There are those, however, that think the legal drinking age should be lowered to eighteen. There is a student organization called R.A.L.L.Y. [Realistic Alcohol Laws for Legal Youth], they strive to lower the age so that college age students learn how to drink responsibly instead of hiding their drinking. I think that is a joke. If students and teens still drink a lot without being able to legally buy alcohol, imagine how they would act if it were legal. Being legal would just give them an excuse to drink more often. The law has the age at twenty-one for reasons that are too strong to refute, just like I mention above.

alcohol-related [First Eagle]. In a single year, 522 children under age 14 where arrested for driving while intoxicated [First Eagle]. I’m very glad that the legal drinking age is twenty-one. Minimum Drinking Age Laws reduce traffic fatalities involving drivers in 18 to 20 years old by 13%. These laws have saved an estimated 18,220 lives since 1975 (NHTSA, 1999)[MADD].

Another thing is that most underage drinkers don’t learn their lesson after a night of
