Does Viewing Television Increase Aggression?

Does Viewing Television Increase Aggression?

I love watching television, although I have found that I do not have as much time as I used to. Cartoons are my favorite and I have noticed that Nickelodeon has some of the best cartoons I have seen, they may have no point whatsoever but none-the-less I crack up every time. Yet I see myself changing the channel when my nine year old sister walks into the room. Because even though I can distinguish the difference between right and wrong and make believe and actual events, I am not sure that she can completely do that herself. This is why I agree with Centerwall’s argument. I feel that television violent or not has a great impact on all people especially children. Centerwall also believes that television has a huge impact on the amount of violence that is shown in children. He believes that this television caused violence stays with them throughout life and can affect how they act as adolescents and adults. He also feels that there should be controls in the amount of violence that is allowed on TV or at least that there be some kind of controls for parents to monitor what their child is watching.

Centerwall has two main arguments to defend his beliefs about television violence. His

I have been babysitting since I was 13 years old. I have babysat for family, friends and people I have never even met before. The children have been anywhere in age from newborns to 10 years old. According to what we have learned in class thus far, this age is known as the critical period. Everything that happens to a child in this stage of life affects their personalities and how they are going to act as they grow up. One thing I have noticed through out the past six years is that all of the children watch a lot of television, and turning on the TV, at times, seemed like a simple way to keep them calm for the few minutes their favorite program airs. An excellent example of how television violence affects children would be an experience I had with some of my cousins. I was watching two of my aunt’s children. One of them has a boy and a girl and the other has two girls. My aunt with two girls does not allow them to watch “violent” programs. They mainly watch shows like Teletubbies and Dragon Land. While the other children can watch shows that have more action and contain bad guys and good guys. This particular day we had sat down and watched a Barney movie together. Afterwards they all wanted to play Barney; well the two girls sang their songs and played their little make-believe games while the other two decided they wanted to be the bad guys who fought Barney. Needless to say the whole episode ended in a lot of crying and unhappy kids. But through family parties and get togethers I have noticed that boy and the girl are generally more violent and want to play harsher games than all of my other cousins.

In reading Siano’s arguments to the effects of TV violence on children I often wondered if he agreed or disagreed with Centerwall. He came on very strongly at first stating, “…the more explosions, crashes, gunshots and defective ACME catapults there are, the better it is for the little tykes” (Siano, pg 137). He continued to make points and show e
