The six elements that a drama consists of are listed below with a short definition, in reference to a drama, following:

Plot-the ongoing business of the characters, what they strive for, what they expect to see happen. The sequence of actions or events.

Character- is either developed or flat, either individuated or typed, either symbolic or psychological. That which reveals the moral purpose of the agents.

Diction- the choice of words with special care for their expressiveness.

Thought- the ideas expressed in a work of

Given these facts, we now understand what a drama is and what elements are essential to making it successful. So, it is quite easy to say that no, a tragedy, a type of drama, cannot exist without all of these elements. According to “The American Heritage Dictionary,” a tragedy is-a dramatic work depicting a protagonist engaged in a significant struggle ending in ruin or profound disappointment. When looking at this definition, two of the main elements of a tragedy are obvious. A protagonist would represent the character element and the plot element is represented by the significant struggle ending in ruin. In the drama Antigone, the plot, character, and diction are not only the key elements, but they are all dependent upon one another.

Now if you were to watch the drama and all the characters that made up the plot were to talk in a monotone voice with no inflection what so ever, you would not experience the true aspect of a drama. An element of drama is diction and of course the diction relates to the characters of a drama. It’s their job in this sense to get the full aspect of the plot across to the audience. Without Haemon using a select vocabulary and inflection in his voice, his point would not have been made to Creon or the audience. It is the characters job to keep the audience aware of high times and low times in a drama and word usage and tone are very important in that aspect.
