East Of Eden

Love is the inspiring force behind all conflicts in the book East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Every character, in one way or another, is possessed by love, to do things that aren’t always well thought out. Cyrus, Charles, Adam, Cathy, Aron, and Cal Trask are all in a continual battle for each other’s love. In certain cases this battle ends in death or close to.

Cyrus Trask established his love for his family by training his boys all their lives to prepare for war. To Cyrus, the army was the most respectable job that one could have. So he saw no conflict (even though it was an apparent one) in the fact that even though he loved his son, he was sending him off to his death. He picked the son he loved best, Adam, even though Charles Trask was clearly the natural soldier of the two brothers. In chapter 3 Steinbeck explains, "Charles was a natural athlete and the competitor’s will to win over others, which makes for success in the world”. (Steinbeck 20) “Young Charles won all contests with Adam whether they involved skill, strength, or intelligence and won them so easily that quite quickly that he had to find his competition among other children." (Steinbeck 20) When Cyrus decided that it was Adam who was to go to into the a

than Charles. He would only give the distinct order to go and become a soldier to his most prized son.

The love Cal feels for people, especially his father, is not always apparent, because his actions don’t always come out as loving. Between the two Trask boys, Cal doesn’t seem loveable. Aron is the one that people take an instant liking to, including his father Adam. Cal wants nothing more than the love of his father. He is constantly criticizing himself because, in a way, he doesn’t feel worthy of his father’s love. The same way Charles felt about his father. When Adam loses $15,000 in his failed business of cross country produce shipping, Cal decides that he will make the money back and give it to Adam as a present. Will Hamilton told him that he is trying to buy his father’s love but he says that though this is true, it doesn't matter. Cal tries to win some of the admiration that Adam gives to Aron through this present. When Adam receives the gift he is unhappy, and tells Cal that he must give the money back because he made it dishonestly. By contrast, Adam is very proud of Aron for finishing school and going off to college. Cal is crushed and to make his brother suffer, he shows Aron his mother. Aron dies when he goes to war ultimately killing his father Adam. If Cal hadn’t been jealous of the love that Adam had for Aron he would have never revealed the lethal truth about his mother that killed his brother and then his father.
