Economical, Social, Political Change- US History

Throughout history people of all countries have had to deal with change on an economical, social, and political level. During the late nineteenth century, and into the end of the First World War the American people had to deal with huge economical change, and many new conditions. For some, many of these changes came with tortuous times of hardship and loss, whereas for others, came times of wealth and glory.

One of the main changes that Americans had to deal with was the modernization that the United States was experiencing, because of the industrial growth. Every day new machines were being invented that would replace the jobs of many men, and only need one man to operate. Because of these new machines, many of these factory oriented businesses would have large scale layoffs with no sort of social security, or way for the workers to save money for times of no work. These menial operational jobs required no skill, and therefore big businesses could pay less money to a less skilled worker. The businesses could lower the pay of workers even more, because so many men were out of work and trying to get any job that they could.

This modernization also affected workers on the railroads, workers in the steel mills, and just

Another area where Taft had problems was with reaching the people on their level. He didn’t have the energy that Roosevelt had, and was not good with the press, therefore the people couldn’t relate to him as a person. He agreed with many of Roosevelt’s ideas, but he was not bold enough to carry some of them out.

After Taft’s term ended, Woodrow Wilson took the next presidential election. Wilson was considered a strong president, even though he did not have the personality of Roosevelt. Although Wilson didn’t have the attitude that Roosevelt had, he was able to lead Congress into enacting his proposals. He used the Presidency as a vehicle for directing legislation, and signed more reform legislation than Roosevelt and Taft combined. Wilson did use Roosevelt’s idea of using the mass media and held the first presidential press conference. He also followed Roosevelt to give the government increased federal power, and started the Federal Reserve Board, and the Federal Trade Commission. These boards would help regulate big businesses and Wall Street, and help to control anti-trust trade. Finally, Wilson was the man who brought us into the war in Europe after, he had stated, during the elections, that he would not bring America into war.

“The economic facts of life”, as Wilson had called them, were a hard thing for the President to try and meet. All three of these Presidents did the best that they could to take care of the needs of the American people. Sometimes what they did to help the economy angered the people, and sometimes it made them heroes. With businesses running the way that they were, it was hard for America to accept these changes, and to face the “economic facts of life”.
