Edgar Allen Poe

Edgar Allan Poe is considered to be one of the greatest poets and writers of short story fiction. He is branded as the father of the American short story and father of the detective story. Poe is primarily known for writing horror/gothic stories, but also has another fame in which he wrote detective stories and in fact started the whole genre of detective fiction. He practically created the detective story and perfected the psychological thriller. Poe did not write any detective novels, just short stories that later on became the most influential pieces of work for the detective story genre. Many authors have made great contributions to the world of literature. Mark Twain introduced Americans to life on the Mississippi. Thomas Hardy wrote on his pessimistic views of the Victorian Age and Edgar Allan Poe gave us the dark and gloomy side of fiction stories. To better understand Poe and his writings, you need to look at his early life.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. His parents, David Poe and Elizabeth Arnold Poe were poverty struck parents so he was born into poverty. Two years after Poe was born his mother died from tuberculosis. Poe then had to be put up for adoption and was later on adopted by

From this short biography of Poe, you can see where he gets his imagination of murder, mystery and horror. Having lived a troubled life he formed a dark imagination in which he wrote successful stories of horror and mystery. The most important contribution his detective stories make to the development of the short story is made up a story’s central theme and structure by which the reader perceives that merging structure and pattern. The detective stories are Poe’s best example of works in which questions of interpretation are not outside the story but are involved in every stage of the narrative development.

All of this is the basis of mystery and detective stories today. These features became a major influence after Poe’s death, all the way up to present time. In most detective books, movies, or television shows these days, all the features of Poe’s stories are used. The best example is Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. These characters, created by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1886, are all derived from Poe’s works. Holmes is the intellectual detective with his sidekick Dr. Watson and Holmes uses his brain to solve the case. These are the best recreations of Poe’s characters.

Poe wrote these stories in a way so that the reader can become and think like the detective to try to figure out the crime before the detective does and then see if they were right. He cleverly adds the sidekick in the story to help the reader if he or she is confused. Because the sidekick knows less than the detective, the reader can relate to him and thus understand and better follow the story. He wants the reader to be able to read his stories and look back and say to themselves that they could have figured it out.
