            One way that smoking effects your lungs is to trigger mucus secretions.
             secretions can build up over time and end up blocking the airways. There are also .
             microphages located in your respiratory tract. Microphages are good for fighting .
             infection and smoke particles can kill the microphages. One of the worst effects .
             is because of carcinogens. Carcinogens cause cell division, which leads to cancer. .
             Cigarette smoke also stops the bronchioles and cilia for several hours. This .
             makes it easier for particles or germs to enter the body which can cause more .
             sickness.
             Bronchitis is another problem caused by cigarette smoke. What happens with .
             bronchitis is that damage is done to the epethelial tissue and they become .
             irritated. When they become irritated they secrete an excess of mucus. It is easy .
             for bacteria to get caught up in the mucus and it then backs up. Soon, if not .
             treated, the bronchioles become inflamed. Then bacteria and chemical agents do .
             damage to the bronchiole walls. Mucus secreting cells can soon multiply. After a .
             while this can obstruct the airways.
             Emphysema comes from bronchitis. Emphysema comes from when bacteria .
             attacks the walls of the alveoli. Gas exchange goes at a slower rate because of .
             fewer alveoli. When the lungs become inelastic it is hard to breathe. Emphysema .
             is fatal.
