Elgin Marbles

The best website for the return of the Parthenon marble is www.greece.org/parthenon/marbles/, this website offers background information of how the marbles ended up in London, the history of the marbles, a gallery page and is sponsor of the Parthenon 2004 campaign. All objectives for the campaign are listed and include some goals like convincing the United Kingdom government and museum to agree to return the marbles to the New Acropolis museum where a glass structure has been erected to one day house the marbles once they are returned. Also things like having the issue of where the marbles should be kept as a debate topic in educational settings. I think this website is the best in support for the return of the Parthenon marbles because it gives a lot of information on the Parthenon 2004 campaign and lists several ways in which you can support their cause and offer an opportunity to email the Ministry of Culture in London asking the Heritage Minister to engage in negotiations with the Greek government for the return of the marbles. This website offers mass amounts of information surrounding the dispute between the United Kingdom and Greek governments over the rights of possession for the marbles. I chose to use the Greek text and chose the subject of Hesiod’s Theogony and Cosmogony at the website http://alexm.here.ru/mirrors/www.enteract.com/jwalz/Eliade/059.html, the author of the text is Hesiod, a philosopher who lived around the eigth century B.C. This reading is Hedios’ version of how everything came to be such as Earth, night and day, the oceans, etc. His belief is that the first thing that happened was the Void, a universal occurrence of chaos that gave birth to Earth. From the void also came night and darkness, from night came day and mother Earth then produces the mountains and oceans. Earth also gave birth to the three violent cyclops who were just as powerful as other gods but had only one eye, their names were Lightner, Thunderer, and Flash. These cyclops gave Zeus the power of thunder and lightning. The last part talks of the Great Father Sky, apparently the main god who calls upon all his children, the Titans, the gods who take over rule as the main gods and are eventually overthrown by Zeus and the other main eleven gods in Greek mythology.

In my opinion, the marbles should be returned to Greece simply because they were bribed from the Turkish conquerors and had no right to be removed. They are a very important part of Greece’s ancient history and they should have ownership. It would be ridiculous if some country came to America and took the Statue of Liberty to put in their museum. Not that great museums and art galleries of the world should be deprived of their prized foreign collections but they should at least be obtained in a moral way.
