Energy Scientists

Allesantro Volta was born to a noble family on October 19, 1745 in Como Italy .He was educated at the public schools there, and though not an outstanding student, he had decided to become a physicist at the age of fourteen. In 1774 he was appointed professor of physics at the Royal School in Como, and the following year he invented the electophosphorus,. The instrument simply consisted of two metal sheets separated by an insulator, but once electrically charge by being rubbed, it could transfer it's charge to other objects. The electrophorus proved a much more effective design than the Leyden jar, an early form of electric capacitor. Within the next three years Volta discovered and isolated methane gas.
In 1779 Volta became a professor at the University of Pavia,. He invented other devices involving static electricity, and received the Copley medal of the Royal Society for his achievements. He continued experimenting with electrical conduction and, after reading Luidi Galvani"a experiments with "animal electricity" , he theorized that animal tissue was not necessary to conduct electricity, as previously believed. His proof of this theory was the battery, which he invented in 1800.
The first battery, or "voltaic pile", was a column of metal disks supported by galss rods and individually separated by cardboard or paper soaked in acid and salt solutions.
