Once a patient has been diagnosed with epilepsy, it’s time to hopefully find a suitable treatment. There are more than twenty medications along with several alternative methods.

It has also been found that an infection of the brain or CNS can cause seizures. These can be encephalitis, meningitis, and herpes simplex virus. Hypoglycemia, a complication of diabetes, and brain tumors, cancerous and non-cancerous has also been linked. One other cause could be cavernous angiomas, which are abnormally growing blood vessels.

Surgery is usually not the first method of preventing seizures but is hope for a patient that has tried the standard medicines and has partial seizures. The Center for Disease Control and the National Association of Epilepsy Center prefer that patients not responding to medications for a year seek other treatment such as surgery. Not all patients benefit from surgery and it is a complicated process. Patients must have long tests done to locate the exact spot the seizures are originating. This is a great option for some patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Seizure medication afterward must be continued and slowly weaned off.

Epilepsy in children can be case by many factors because children are much more susceptible to many things. Infants and children are at high risk for head trauma which can cause epilepsy. Also viral infections, birth defects difficulties during delivery, and poisoning can cause childhood seizures.

Epilepsy does not appear to pose a serious risk for a woman becoming pregnant but anticonvulsant medication does. It is untested but has been known to cause cleft lip of palate, genital or urinary abnormalities, neural tube defects in the skull or spinal column, mental impairment, heart defects, and deficiencies in vitamin K causing a risk in hemorrhage. Neural tube defects can be prevented by taking folic acid during the first trimester since the medications lower this in your body. There are also more common labor complications in women with epilepsy. Vaginal bleeding, anemia and preeclamsia are tree of these. If a seizure occurs during labor a cesarean may have to be preformed.
