For The Love of Sports

Sports play a large role in many aspects of American culture reaching beyond lines of class, race, and even gender (Richman and Shaffer 189). Athletic competition has been part of our society since the early beginnings of man. Gladiators, wrestlers and sprinters are early types of athletes who competed. Mankind seems to have been born with the desire to compete; every man feels the need to have dominance over other men. These facts are even apparent in today’s society. This is a part of what drives college athletes into athletics. Sports fans love the thrill of hard college competition. College athletes are more dedicated, more determined, and more focused than many professional athletes. People have a different motive for participating in sports. College athletes have the internal desires to compete for the love of their sports. In the film Love and Basketball Monica (Sanna Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps) teach each other how to play the game. Their commitment to sports, however, will force them to make a choice between each other and the game, between family and team, between love and basketball. First, some young athletes’ performances are influenced by the media. The media provides national coverage and exposes small town athletes to the world. The media writes documentaries on young athletes for sports readers. If the reader did not know the athlete at the beginning, he will certainly know the athlete by the end of the article. The media’s articles are filled with stats on athletes, which stats always catch the attention of sport readers. Getting media coverage is very competitive among college athletes, especially those who are attending small colleges. Athletes are exposed to commercials, which have the ability to reach people, are powerful, believable, selective and flexible. For example, marketing brings the player into millions of homes and creates an image that caters to the ideal hero. The player becomes a household name through television commercials. Marketing sports have allowed organizations to market their products with the most appeal. For example, athletes now endorse drinks, shoes, underwear, and car commercials. “Action is the name of the game when it comes to athletes and sports, but for marketers looking to get the most from their sports sponsorship spending, it is not just a matter of catching the wave, but how long it peters out” (Moore). It is accepted in society that sports are a business and, therefore, an athlete’s job. Once athletes are exposed by the media, we have the tendency to follow those athletes’ careers. The media sometimes over- emphasizes an athlete and leaves out the true athlete, who is the backbone of the team. Unless athletes get plenty of help from the media, getting recognition is hard to achieve.

Second, college athletes’ performances are influenced by people who include family, coaches, and fans. College athletes want to work harder and achieve more because family members see potential in them which they don’t see. Family members also always encourage their athletes even when those athletes don’t perform their best or do not play a particularly good game. Families support lends morale support. For example, when the team loses a game and does not get to play, families or parents console their athletes by saying the athletes looked great today. Families encourage their athletes to be the athletes can be. If they slip and fall, they must get up and start all over again. Families cheer their athletes on, even when things do not look good for the team. Family stands proud and uplifts spirits by showing up at each home game and some out of town games. Thorthan Brown, an ex-college basketball player, said to me in our personal interview that “If I perform well during basketball season, my parents rewarded me with a new car.” This type of reward serves to control the athletes and make them focus more on the end result than on enjoying the game, and it could be the result of his family members living their goals and dreams through their young athletes’ abilities.
