Ethics

This paper gives the pro’s as well as the cons of the proposed and accepted plan for student housing at the Spartan School of Aeronautics Campus located south of the airport on Pine Street. There are general concerns about the safety of living close to an airport and under the runway that I will discuss in the following pages. I will also give the reasons I believe Spartan have for doing such a costly project at their main campus.

Universities and Private Colleges alike are constructing student housing facilities for the students coming into their schools. Many of these schools get government grants that help pay for their construction and many get donations from private and public companies and residents. Other schools that already have housing facilities are remodeling and or upgrading the buildings to accommodate the demands of their students. So now the question arises, why? Why are the schools doing all this and spending all this money for temporary residents? Why are students opting for housing on campus rather than off? Why are students choosing small rooms to share rather than their own apartment?

Colleges and Universities spend on an average, twenty-million dollars on

The topic is up for debate at the University of Maryland. Currently they are dealing with a proposal to construct student housing in College Park, less than a mile from the town’s airport.

What if the school set up student housing in an area that is dangerous and possibly deadly? What if your student housing was in a direct path with a landing airplane? Being subjected daily to the noise of aircraft flying overhead may be a risk factor for high blood pressure, suggests research in Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM, November 12, 2001). Living close to a flight path may increase the risk of high blood pressure, is this good reason? There is no difference in risk between men and women, but older people and those with good hearing are more likely to report high blood pressure if they live in areas of high ambient aircraft noise levels. The aircraft noise may act as a stressor, so raising blood pressure and therefore might be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

In order for the school to succeed with the student housing, they need to sell the idea to students and provide enough satisfaction to the student that he or she will decide to stay there the entire duration of their school years. So how can the school sell the idea, how can they make a student want to live on campus and not off? Why will a student want to share a one room dorm with another person?

Other benefits of student housing that a school may use to sell are: Make new friends right where you live, take advantage of many leadership opportunities, profit from other study sessions with students in your major, live only minutes from all main campus classes, apply for on campus employment, avoid long commutes to school and save time and gas, have all the benefits of off campus housing but pay less, live with students your age, avoid unexpected move-in cost and utility set up, cafeteria, laundry facilities, common areas with big screen TV, pool table, just to name a few. With so many opportunities and benefits available, it’s hard for a student to not want to stay on campus.

The answer is benefits. By providing many benefits to the student, the school secures a potential student as a resident.

With so many different choices to continue education, colleges and universities are spending more on student housing and activities within housing to make prospective students yearn to attend. Making the housing structures look like apartments and providing a town setting within the buildings gives a student the sense that h
