Every Day Faces

As I walk about the campus each day and observe the different sites and interactions of the people, it amazes me how we are so different, but yet many of us are the same. I watch as we transfer from class to class, the scenery at the cafe on the inside as well as outside, the student grill, and the Chapel on Sunday. These are very interesting places to observe because you have so many different personalities and ideas uniting as one. And all of this takes place on the campus of Hampton University. Each day, many of us scramble from class to class looking like little ants running about lost. Then there is time spent front the Science and Technology building and the lobby of MLK and Buckman in between classes. In front of the Science & Technology is majority upperclassmen having their bonding time since many of them do not live on campus anyway. They all post up on the walls whether it is cold or hot and just chill and talk. Some play around hitting and chasing each other; while others show each other love by hugging one another and expressing themselves. Then you have the lobby of MLK and Buckman where everyone chills in between classes. This is the one of the main spots in between the ten minute break session before each of our ne

xt classes. Here, when you walk through the door you hear a collage of voices trying to be heard all at once. You have people standing on the walls smiling and conversing, while others are sitting on the circular bench doing the same, a! nd finally you have those chilling on the steps. Once the ten minute session is up, you hear everyone scrambling trying to get to class. After everyone is gone it is complete silence again, maybe one or two voices speaking. Then, once class ends the cycle begins again. Outside of the hang-outs I observe those walking to class. Some like I walk with very serious faces just trying get where we need to be. It’s nothing like a rainy day on campus when everyone has on their wind-breakers and umbrellas popped up as protection from the rain. Also, what tops the rain off are the strong winds called “THE HAWK”. So you have to be ready when it is coming your way. Next you have the cold days. Then you have to worry about “THE HAWK” attacking. It is one thing to be cold but when you have the wind to go along with it, it makes it much worst. In both of these weather situations you see everyone all bundled up with no time for socializing, just trying to get where they need to be! . But still, you have the gathering in the MLK and Buckman lobby. Also, another thing which can be observed is that since many of us come from so many different places, our lifestyles are all different. To me, the cold weather is cold, but to a northerner it is nothing. I am all wrapped up and some of them are walking around without jackets on. This is extremely funny to me. Then another thing is listening to all of the different accents. You have then northern accents, then the southern ones, the west coast accents, and the Midwest accents. So here on campus everyone sounds different and we have tendencies to tease one another for not sounding the same. At the same time while we are mocking each other’s accents we are surely adapting some of the others terms and sayings. Another observation is the few white faces on campus and those of other nationalities. They all look like specks as those on a Dalmatian dog only they’re not black. I have observed how they sti! ck with one another and sometimes they mingle amongst us. And then to top it off, some of them sound very different from us because of their nationality. So here we are in our own little universe interacting amongst each other. Now let us take a little journey to the cafeteria. As you are walking towards the cafeteria you see quite a few people chilling on the outside, standing in street, and sitting on the rails and the walls. Then you see the different sororities and fraternities gathered at their spots. You know when another Q has arrived to their tree spot because you hear their loud and boisterous dog bark and then they thro
