Evolutionary Biology

1. Conflict: In this movie, it is very hard to pull out only one protagonist, or one antagonist. The characters that are most important in the movie are Vincent, Jules, Butch, and Marsellus. Throughout the movie each of them plays a protagonist role along with an antagonist role against one another. Also throughout the movie they all cooperate in different ways amongst each other. A couple examples of this may be the pawn shop scene where at the beginning Marsellus and Butch were fighting each other and the owner hits them over the head and drags them in the back. He calls his “partner” Jed and they chose which one is going to “get it.” When Marsellus is chosen and they go in to a room with him, Butch breaks off the ties and saves Marsellus, which in turn saves his own life. Another scene where cooperation is taking place is when Vincent and Jules bring their blood soaked car to Jules’ friend Jimmy’s house. They call Marsellus looking for help, and Marsellus sends Mr. Wolf to help them. Although they fought along the way, they get it done with a little bit of order from Mr. Wolf and cooperation amongst one another. In the last scene, the bacon conversation scene, there is a lot of cooperation

2. The movie shows the shifting of Derek’s character from the outer rings to the inner rings. At first the movie shows that Derek was more focused on his KKK street gang, and everything that gang represented. He invested a lot into this, and risked his life and his family’s life to show the broader community that he was in this street gang. He acted as a hawk towards anyone that was not a white protestant. Being a part of this street gang, his fitness potential as well as his brother’s and his family decreased as he had so much hatred towards others who were not white protestants. After killing two black men which he thought was a morally okay act, Derek had to go to jail, which also affected his fitness potential. Derek killed those two men which were not legally right, but according to Derek’s own beliefs, killing those two men went along with is ethics and morals.

b. Fitness potential comparison: Derek becoming aware of his actions and how it is harming his family shows the shift from the community level to the family level, which shows the theme of family importance. The theme of racism is shown throughout the movie, and one example of how racism can decrease fitness is how Daniel dies at the end. His death shows what his racist thinking affected his and his families life.

All three of our movies deal with individuals who are being exploited, manipulated, or brainwashed into partaking in such acts that diminish them morally and decrease their fitness potential, but increase the fitness-potential of the exploitative character. In some instances, as with Daniel and Vincent, the characters lose their lives. Those who learned their lesson, walked away before it was too late and lived. The exploitative characters in the movies were Marcellus, Lumbergh, and Carmen. These characters were practicing hawk behavior and eventually faced retaliatory action. Marcellus received it in a different way than did Lumbergh and Daniel, but they still shared that “punishment”. There was also a common character in all three movies, the one that tried to convince the character who wanted out, to stay because they themselves were too afraid to move along. Their fate is shown at the end, and it is apparent that they made the wrong choice. Mike and Samir continued to work behind another cubicle, Vincent died, and Daniel also died. In Pulp Fiction Vincent was trying to convince Jules to stay working for Marcellus. In Office Space Michael was trying to convince Peter to continue
