Evoltion

Since the introduction of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution through natural selection, there have been numerous arguments regarding his theory. I never knew the idea of natural selection until I took a summer class here at SJSU about the origins of life. After I took that class my thinking about the word “evolution” became completely different. Even if I was raised to believe that God was the creator of everything, the evidence that was presented to support the idea of evolution was hard to disregard. The idea of natural selection was very interesting. In this paper I will briefly discuss the idea of natural selection and its role in the process of speciation(the formation of a new species).

How do new and different species develop? How do existing species change over time? The answer to these questions is found through the process of evolution. According to Monroe W. Strickberger, a professor at the University of Missouri in St. Louis, evolution is defined as, "Genetic changes in populations of organisms through time that lead to differences among them". Evolution has many mechanisms through which these genetic changes occur. One of the most important of these mechanisms is natural selection.

All in all the idea of natural selection is a very strong and convincing reasoning towards the question how do new species develop? I think that most people are not able to embrace the idea of natural selection because it is not something you can see happen in front of your eyes. It is a process that takes place within a very large time frame. But scientists have done that observation for a large time frame and presented the facts. And it is up to us to see the facts and make up our minds. I know it is a hard fact to swallow that the chimps and us shared an ancestor a very long time ago. Personally I am glad that I took that class on the origins of life. It made me realize that there is a different way of thinking towards the question of where did we (humans) come form? And that way of thinking is not just a myth or rumor that is just going around, but in fact it is an idea that is almost scientifically proven.

The idea of natural selection was formed by both Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in the mid-1800s. Unaware of each other's work, they developed the same theory independently. The theory of natural selection states that individuals with the most favorable traits will be more likely to survive and pass these favorable traits on to future generations. The concept of natural selection has commonly become known as "survival of the fittest."

Natural selection allows a population the chance to make the most of their environ
